The first day of the second semester came. The students were very happy to see their friends and teachers again. They came to school earlier than on other days. The children were very excited about changes happening in the basketball court area of our school. Only three weeks ago the basketball court disappeared to be replaced by "Green Artificial Grass". It looked very beautiful. The children ran and played with enjoyment. Some boys fell down, but their knees were not hurt. They were amazed with the wonderful grass.
I saw some boys somersaulting and relaxing on the grass. I thought they might imagine that this field belonged only to them. I saw a doubt inside the young children's eyes. One student walked up to me, touched my hands, turned his face upwards and asked "Miss Wilairat: Why does the grass grow so quickly within three weeks? My father waters a grass field at my home every day but the grass is not as green as here. "It's artificial grass, not real grass so it cannot grow and we don't need to cut it", I answered. This is the answer I could think of at the time. However it didn't help the young boy understand clearly. That boy stared at me in wonder and walked away."How should I explain to my young students about the difference between "artificial grass and real grass"? If I bring them to search in Wikis, I'm not sure if they will understand or not. During the last 15 years, I've taken them to search in encyclopedias for kids. I wonder "Are there Wikis for young kids? Can you share this information with me please?

Wilairat,
ReplyDeleteI was excited too when I saw green grass. How beautiful it is! I love it even they are artificial grass but I do like it very much.
Your question is very interesting. I found Wiki for kid : http://wikiforkids.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
but it doesn't provide any information about Artificial grass then I went back to Wikis and found the answer 'Artificial turf' on this following link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_turf
I think it not too difiicult for students to understand what it is but teacher should be guide them.
Thank you Cherry to share Wiki for Kids. It helps me a lot. I will guide my young students to search about "artificial grass". I agree with you about "artificial grass". Anyhow I think "natural" is the best. So the people should help each other to take care and save the environment. I feel sad because now many parts of Thailand is flooding. I makes me recall one movie "Water World." It causes from people destroy the environment.
ReplyDeleteHere is a video about Artificial grass and how it helps the environment. maybe you can use it with your students. I never even thought about fake grass in my area. It snows where I live half the year and fake grass is really only good for places where people are trying to save money on water.

Thank you Aiabramo to share a video about "fake grass".I will use it with my young students.I dream to see snows like your country one day. In Asia the weather is hot..hotter and hotter every year. The weather changes to be worse every year because the people destroy the environment. Fake grass is an optional way for the people nowadays. I think adults should give the children knowledge about what fake grass is and why we use it instead of real grass.
ReplyDeleteHi Wilairat:
ReplyDeletePlease see the website below that shows pictures of real and fake grass. It seems that two primary distinguishing features are color and texture. It would be great if you could have a hands on lesson withthe kids and ask them to bring some grass from home and they could compare their home grass to the school grass to see if they could see and feel any differences.

Thank you Aja for your suggestion about website and how to teach young children to understand about "fake grass". It's a great idea. I will follow your suggestion and let you know the outcomes later.
ReplyDeleteWiki for Kids is good for your students and I like you use it for showing beautiful green grass.

Wikis in the Classroom
ReplyDeletehttp://www.slideshare.net/coolcatteacher/wikis-in-the-classroom
They use wiki to vote in classroom and show Cone of learning
I've never seen it before. It's surprising.Your teaching method is very interesting because you can adapt Wikis to your lesson. I like it so much.
ReplyDeleteI was excited too! I think the students will learn more quickly by touching the real things .A good model better than million descriptions .If we only search on the internet they only know about physical and how to... or only see the pictures. So we need to combine it. thanks for your information.
ReplyDeleteHi Wilairat,
ReplyDeleteI love sports a lot. So I enjoy playing football on the artificial grass. What a great story combined with wiki. I love it!
Hi P'Dow
ReplyDeleteI loved to read your story. Cause it's work for my skill in English. I ever saw the fake grass at the springfield hotel at Hua Hin. I think it good for the other country but not Thailand because here is very wet and good for real grass. I'll read your all stories.
bye
